review and comment::
Barry Phillip Eveleth was born to Herbert and Ruth Eveleth on January
30 (or 31st), 1933 in Lynn, MA. He graduated from Malden High School
in 1951 and then attended Boston College for two years. His father,
a sergeant in WWII, was inspired by the West Point Officers he served
with and wanted Barry to go to the Academy. He originally entered
our rock bound highland home in 1953 with the Class of 1957, but
encounted some difficulties with the Math Department at Christmas
of Plebe Year and was turned back to the Class of 1958. He joined
us in the 'Lost Fifties' division of barracks as a recognized plebe
in Company G-2. Our own "BP' was likeable, easy going, quiet,
and very laid-back. Barry enjoyed skiing, occasionally playing golf,
and shooting a pistol as a member of that club. When not in class,
you could generally find Barry rolled up in his "Brown Boy",
resting until the next formation. [What other stories can we tell
about Barry's life in the company? Athletic prowess? Trips away
from West Point?]
Barry graduated in the top 90 percent of the class, and chose Air
Defense Artillery as his branch selection. After the basic course
at Forts Sill and Bliss, he was assigned to a Nike air defense site
in Bedford, MA where he performed the mired jobs normally assigned
to a fledging junior officer. I don't think anyone was entirely
surprised that he resigned from the Army almost three years to the
day after graduation. He always believed he could make more money
on the outside. He accepted a position as an engineer with the Perini
Corporation, a leading civil and building construction company in
Massachusetts. He subsequently worked for The Volpe Corporation
and several other construction companies in the State as an engineer,
but terminated this line of work because they constantly wanted
him to move. His last career endeavor was with the State of Massachusetts
auditor's office as an inspector of building and road construction
sites.
After leaving active duty, Barry joined the Massachusetts National
Guard's 26th Yankee Division where he eventually became a battery
commander of a field artillery unit. [Can anyone expand on his service
in the NG? What was the specific designation of the battery he commanded?
What were his other assignments? Did he receive any awards? Does
anyone know any stories, humorous incidents, or tales from his troops
or commanders?] His constant travels in the construction business
caused him to resign as a Captain in 1967.
In 1964 Barry married Nancy Ford of Peabody, MA and in 1965 they
had a daughter, Maureen, who together with his grandchildren, were
the loves of his life. Nancy and Barry were divorced in 19???. [Can
anyone expand on this idea? Where married? Where did they live?
Anything unusual happen that's appropriate to tell? Any notable
trips or special interests?]
After retirement, Barry bought an RV and moved to Zephyrhills, FL
where he traveled back and forth to Massachusetts to visit his family
and grandchildren, Ryan, Erika, and Haley, on whom he doted. In
the fall of 2004, [What else did Barry do while in Florida? Hobbies?
Interests?] He returned from Florida because his doctor judged him
to have the beginning stages of Alzheimer's and the state took away
his drivers license. He had no way to get groceries or otherwise
get around, so Maureen went to Florida and brought him back to live
with her family in Massachusetts. When Maureen could no longer care
for him, he was admitted to a nursing home where his health continued
to deteriorate. Barry died on November 14, 2007. Following a Mass
at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Danvers, he was laid to
rest in ??? Cemetery [beside his parents?].
He is survived by his former wife; his daughter, Maureen Teixeira
and her husband, Leonel, and their three grandchildren, Ryan, Erika
and Haley Teixeira; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Theresa
Eveleth of Austin, TX; a niece and four nephews.
Barry was a unique personality. He lived his life as he saw fit
to do. We shall never forget him as a classmate, father and friend.
Go in peace. [Anyone have a better closing? I'm not enamored by
this one].
